Origin of The Little Man

  • Founded in 1842 by Adam Hawks, The Little Man had a glorious history as a journal of satire and commentary, competing with the more puerile Punch magazine. Sadly the days when John Stuart Mill used our pages to argue for universal suffrage are long gone. The printing presses finally stopped in 1970 after an unwarranted prosecution under the Obscene Publications Act that quickly followed a vexatious libel action brought by Sir Anthony Eden.

The Little Man's first foray into electronic publishing was in 1982, using the Prestel system, but this was shortlived. In 2005 the wonders of Google's Blogger reduced our overheads and led us to try again. The Little Man was a quarterly publication and we continue that tradition with long periods of inactivity, punctuated by intense but sporadic bursts of creative output. In a mark of respect to Captain Oates, our military correspondent during the Boer War, we pseudonymously honour his name and maintain anonymity. We, also, have been away for some time.

Continued legal wrangling with the Eden Estate prevents us using the original name, so welcome to…

Celebrity Endorsements

“O well.”
 — William Gibson, author (and co-inventor, with Al Gore, of The Internet).

“Written by someone who was similarly perturbed over a year ago.”
 — TV's Richard Herring, comedian.

“Rest assured that by the end of this trial they will not have a pot in which to piss.”
 — Sir Anthony Eden.

“You're so right [that Little Man does not get the accolades it deserves]. Which is why I've just added you to my blogroll.”
 — Chip Dale, champion Welsh fornicator.
